The start point of today’s levada walk is from the valley of Machico, the second largest town in Madeira Island and located east of Funchal. Machico was the first town to be discovered in 1419 by the Portuguese navigators Tristão Vaz Teixeira and João Gonçalves Zarco. The side valleys of the ‘Ribeira de Machico’ are particularly lovely in the spring when the Acacia is flowering. Along the levada walk, you will have the opportunity to observe the only irrigation channel (levada walk) in the dry north-east of Madeira Island. Discover the stunning views over the bay of Machico and observe the famous Poios Madeirenses (agricultural terraces). You may be lucky enough to taste some of the fresh fruit that some farmers sell along the Levada walk. The forest along this walk is an exotic forest introduced by the people from Madeira and composed by Acacias and some pine trees.

Day 3: Wednesday 11th November - Pico do Arieiro

Our coach takes us to the start point of the walk at Pico do Arieiro at 1818 meters above sea level and ends at the highest point of Madeira, Pico Ruivo at around 1861 meters. Along its 10km route, look out for fabulous panoramic views over the central mountain range that will knock your socks off.

After taking in the surroundings in Pico do Arieiro, the trail leads us to Ninho da Manta where you can look forward to wonderful views over Fajã da Nogueira Valley and Nun’s Valley as well as the highest plateau in the island – Paul da Serra. This mountain range is integrated in the Natura 2000 Network, a European network of great importance for nature conservation. Here nests the Freira da Madeira, one of the most endangered and important bird species in Europe. The vegetation at this altitude is dominated mainly by the Centenary endemic Urzes, large trees which predate Madeira’s discovery.

To reach Pico Ruivo (1862 meters), Madeira’s highest point, we must overcome steep ascents and descents and some exposure. The route is well fenced and getting to the top is certain to be a rewarding experience, with a 360° panoramic view over the surrounding mountain range.

After stopping at Pico Ruivo for an optional snack, we descend to Achadas do Teixeira (1817 meters), where this walk ends, and our coach will be waiting for the return journey to the hotel.

The Ponta de São Lourenço is classified as a partial natural reserve and part of the European network of important community sites – Natura 2000.
Named after the explorer Zarco´s ship, the ‘São Lourenço’, this peninsula is linked underwater to the Desertas Island. The walk will reward you with many sightings of unique plants, in all about 140 species, 31 that are exclusive to Madeira Island.

After fantastic views over Machico, the trail heads upwards to reach the viewpoint of Boca do Risco, with views over the Atlantic, as well as the Ponta de São Lourenço, the Penha d’Aguia and The Porto Santo Island in the distance.

Follow the coastal path trail as we head for Porto da Cruz, with fascinating views along the way. The route is quite narrow and vertiginous in places as we pass iconic rock formations.
