Experience the old frontier in style as we discover the amazing natural landscapes and geological curiosities of Central Oregon – known as High Desert Country – returning each night to our luxurious private houses at the Sunriver Resort near Bend.

Explore dormant volcanoes as well as volcanic caldera on guided walks across Oregon’s Cascade Mountain Range, a place brimming with the culture, history and geology of the old American West and The Oregon Trail, Settlers, Native Americans and old Western frontier towns. Oregon isn’t just a walker’s paradise, and here we have arranged a well-balanced programme of activities that include canoeing on a pristine mountain lake as well as visits to the fascinating High Desert Museum and the historic frontier town of Bend; not forgetting the many delights of the Sunriver Resort itself!

Your guides for walks and activities are provided by Wanderlust Tours, who will unfold the wonders of theirnative Oregon and introduce you to amazing wilderness areas of outstanding natural beauty, including the Cascade Mountains, National Monuments, State Parks and the Deschutes National Forest.

Walks are graded moderate and are suitable for anyone who is reasonably fit. Travel in connection with the walks and visits to places of interest are by private mini-buses. You are free to join in some or all of the walks and activities. You may be tempted to spend time relaxing at Sunriver Resort to enjoy some of their many leisure amenities.

After each day, we return to Sunriver in good time for you to enjoy the outdoor swimming pools, the Sage Country Club (with indoor pool, steam room and sauna). You will, no doubt, be tempted to enjoy a soak there, or in your own hot tub – probably with a glass of wine!

Our next jaunt is to Crack in the Ground, which provides a great opportunity to walk inside a fault line, where water-loving plants thrive in this desert ecozone. The environment today is spectacular. Packed lunch.

Dinner is at Cowboy Dinner Tree, out in the desert and formerly a chuck wagon favoured by trail herders pushing their cattle through from Silver Lake. This was the halfway point where hungry cowboys were served up buckaroo beans and biscuits. We can expect something better.

After the conducted tour you will probably wish to spend some further time visiting the many exhibits, call at the shop and take refreshments in the cafe. This tour sets the stage perfectly for the rest of our time in Oregon.

We’ll head for Bend to visit Drake Park and Downtown followed by a walk along the Deschutes River to the Old Mill District.

Useful Information

Currency: United States Dollar (USD). £1 will get you (roughly) 1.32 Dollars, with the average price for a cup of coffee in Oregon being $2.70 (but there will be a coffeemaker in your private house). There are ATMS in Bend, Redmond and Seattle Airports and Sunriver Resort. You can exchange money at the airport, but you will generally get by better if paying with card (depending on your bank's foreign exchange fees) or using an ATM while you're over (this, again, is subject to whether the cash machine you're using charges exchange fees).

Language: America is an Anglophone country, and where we are in the Cascades Mountains this is no exception. Spanish is the second most widely spoken language, with Russian following after.

Timezone: Seattle is eight hours behind London.

How Fit Do I Need to Be? We walk through spectacular volcanic landscapes during which our local guide will share the fascinating natural and cultural history of the region. These walks encompass the Cascades, National Parks, National Monuments, State Parks and the Deschutes National Forest. The walks are at an altitude of between 3,000 and 9,000 feet (Sunriver is at 4,100ft) and are suitable for anyone who is reasonably fit.

Dressing for the Hiking in Oregon: Where we travel in September, the blazing heat of high summer has eased a little, with the average day being bright, warm and no without the occasional breeze in the air. Nights can be very cold, and we advise packing layers for both warm and cool temperatures, and if it is likely to be damp/wet or cold, please do not dress in cotton or jeans. Good/comfortable hiking shoes or boots are essential.

Power Plugs and Sockets in Oregon: the plug sockets in North America are almost exclusive to that continent, with the exception of Japan and parts of South America. IF you're visiting from outside these areas, you'll need a suitable travel adapter (which is far cheaper when bought outside of any airport terminal).
