Once the crossroads of the ancient Roman, Ottoman and Byzantine empires, today Istanbul is an exciting and forward-looking city, brimming with historical sites and bustling streetscapes where museums, castles, palaces, great mosques, bazaars are waiting to be explored.

A cruise along the Bosphorus offers one of the best vantage points over many of the city’s iconic landmarks, a journey noted for its magnificent scenery and archaeological remains.

After exploring Istanbul, we head for the ancient city of Troy and the Gallipoli Peninsula, now protected as the Gallipoli Campaign Historic Site; a place of pilgrimage in honour of the Turkish and Allied Forces who fought here in 1915, as well as the site of the ancient city of Troy.

Troy, the legendary city of antiquity and setting of the Trojan War is now a celebrated archaeological site
popular with travellers the world over. It is also a Turkish national park as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where nine ancient cities have been unearthed. Situated on Hisarlık Hill on the north-western tip of Troad Peninsula, the site has total dominion over the Dardanelles, which, along with the Sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus, is today known as the Turkish Straits.

The Gallipoli Peninsula is the site of extensive First World War battlefields and memorials on the north bank of the Dardanelles Strait. It is a commemorative site for the Allied (British Empire, France) and Turkish forces who fought, died and were wounded there.

Useful Information

Currency: Turkish Lira (Eur). One pound sterling will get you (approximately) 7.50 Lira and one USD dollar roughly exchanges 5.8 Lira, with the average price for a cup of coffee in Istabul being 5.6 Lira. ATMs are commonplace.

Timezone: Turkey falls under UTC+3, with no Daylight Savings Time.

Language: Turkish, of course, is the most widely spoken, but as you may expect from a country at the centre of a great cultural exchange there are many other languages in common use, including Kurmanji, Arabic and Zazaki. English is by far the most common foreign language.

How Fit Do I Need to Be? Being comfortable with exploring places on foot for sustained periods is essential. We'll be covering a range of terrain: from the streets of Istanbul to the more rural terrain of the Gallipoli National Park, so packing shoes that can support you well will make all the difference.

Dressing for the Season in Turkey: The Turkish climate is very mild in October, though bright enough to require adequate sun protection. Comfortable shoes for our guided tours will put you in good stead to get the most out of them. We advise you to bring conservative clothes for visiting mosques.

Power Plugs and Sockets in Turkey: Uses standard two-pronged European socket.
