INTRODUCTION
This high quality holiday for the discerning traveller offers a choice of downhill skiing, boarding, cross-country skiing or guided winter walking at the mountain resort of Wengen in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland, staying in the 4-star Sunstar Hotel located in the centre of Wengen. Departing from either Heathrow or Manchester, we fly to Zurich, and then travel by Swiss Rail to Wengen via Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen.

The holiday price includes air and Swiss Rail travel to Wengen, 4-star hotel accommodation with breakfast and dinner and the option, not included in the price, of taking part in the winter walking, skiing, boarding, ski school or cross country skiing, or a combination of each. The programme should appeal to winter walkers, skiers and non-skiing partners.

Wengen (altitude 1274m) is a great base for a winter holiday as it is right in the middle of some of the most dramatic areas of the Swiss Alps. There are no roads leading to Wengen and the only access is by mountain railway from Lauterbrunnen.

The resort is set on a shelf high above the Lauterbrunnen valley, opposite Murren, and can only be reached by cog railway from Lauterbrunnen itslf. This railway carries on up the mountain as one of the two main access routes to the pistes. The Mannlichen cable car, right opposite our hotel, takes just six minutes to reach the high slopes. Also, the wonderful train ride to Europe's highest railway station at Jungfraujoch, known as the "Top of Europe", departs from Wengen.

Sunstar Hotel
The 4-star Sunstar Hotel is situated very conveniently right in the centre of Wengen, right opposite the Mannlichen cable car station and close to all the village amenities including the ice rink. All rooms have private facilities, radio, telephone, TV, mini-bar, safe and hairdrier. Features of the hotel include an excellent indoor swimming pool, sauna, rustic lounge with open log fire, cosy bar and good restaurant. Meals include buffet breakfast and 4-course dinner.

Skiing
The Jungfrau Region has arguably some of the best skiing in Europe and Wengen, with its strong historical links with the earliest British skiers in the Alps, is an ideal location for winter sports enthusiasts.

Nursery slopes for beginners are located close to the hotel with access to 46 runs, 19 lifts and 12 mountain restaurants which are all accessible from the Mannlichen cable car for intermediate and advanced skiing. Lift passes for mountain railways, cable cars and lifts provide unlimited access to all these areas.

The local ski and snowboard school has a reputation for very high standards of instruction and offers six different levels of half-day classes from Sunday to Friday from beginners to advanced. All equipment can be hired locally.

Guided Winter Walks
The beauty of the Alps in winter is not only reserved for skiers. In the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau region there are 60 miles of prepared winter walking paths, through stunning scenery, giving walkers, non-skiers and non-skiing partners the opportunity to enjoy this spectacular region under snow cover.

The walks are operated by Urs Kaderli, of Kaderli Tours. Urs has been our guide for many happy and successful summer walking holidays in Wengen and you are sure to be impressed by his professionalism and local knowledge. Walks are graded from Easy to Moderate and typically involve between three and four hours' walking a day. These guided walks are available on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. A particular feature of this programme is the extensive use made of the mountain railway, gondolas and chair lifts in connection with the walking programme. Included in the price of the holiday is the Jungfraubahnen Pass which gives unrestricted access to these facilities.
