Walking in Argentina and Chile Walking in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Patagonia

Walking in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Patagonia

Walking in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Patagonia

INTRODUCTION
Patagonia is a paradise of massive glaciers, towering granite spires and ice-filled turquoise lakes and we have included some of the very best walks in Patagonia, all day treks at low altitude without the hindrance of large rucksacks, pack animals or porters, returning to the comfort of good quality hotels and hosterias each day.

This fascinating holiday takes us to Buenos Aires and then into Patagonia - to Los Glaciares National Park, Fitz-Roy, and Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina, then crossing into Chile to visit Lago Grey, Los Cuernos (the Horns) and Central Towers in Torres del Paine National Park. The journey continues across the Andes to Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas and Ushuaia on Tierra del Fuego for visits and walks that include the Beagle Channel, off-shore islands and the Tierra del Fuego National Park.

In addition to our visit to Patagonia, we spend three nights in Buenos Aires, the most elegant and sophisticated city in Latin America, and two nights in Brazil to visit the famous falls in Iguazu National Park.

Patagonia
Patagonia is the name given to the southernmost part of the South American continent. Shared by Argentina and Chile, it is washed by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Atlantic to the east. The Patagonian Andes, consisting of soaring granite peaks, the Southern Patagonian Icefield, glaciers and pristine lakes, is regarded as one of the most hauntingly beautiful mountain ranges on earth. Highlights of this holiday will be unforgettable walking in the National Parks of Torres del Paine, Los Glaciares, Tierra del Fuego and Iguazu.

We start and end our journey in Buenos Aires, the Argentinean capital, which has a European feel with grand boulevards and squares lined with delightful cafés and restaurants, where the exuberant locals meet. We will be tasting the city's Latin rhythm and seeking out its oldest artistic haunts, where jazz and tango are always on the menu.

Neighbouring Chile is a narrow mountainous strip stretching over 4000km along the Pacific coast from the Peruvian border in the north to Cape Horn in the south, and contains some of Earth's most extreme and spectacular terrain. The mysterious island of Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire) is at the southern tip of South America, and is the gateway to the vast and empty Antarctic.

Iguazu National Park - Brazil
The holiday includes two nights in Foz, Brazil, where we visit the falls in Iguazu National Park. Starting at the Tropical des Cataratas Hotel, we walk along trails and boardwalks to enjoy the panoramic views of the falls from different levels. This is followed by a zodiac adventure with Macnco Safari to the Devil's Throat and the Iguazu River. An optional helicopter ride over the falls can be arranged on request. As we stay in Brazil located on the border with Paraguay and Argentina, we have arranged dinner on one of the nights accompanied by a musical concert incorporating the music from the three countries.

Walking
In addition to an accompanying tour leader, we have the benefit of local English-speaking guides for the walking programme - graded from Moderate to Hard, depending on distance and elevation. The walks in Glaciares and Torres del Paine National Parks are graded hard, due to some steep elevations and in places some scrambling. We have employed an extra guide for the days where the walking is graded Hard, providing the option of walks that are less challenging and graded Moderate. Travel is by comfortable mini-buses along roads which in this part of the world are variable - expect some rough dirt roads.

Weather
As we will be in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are in reverse, and our visit coincides with their early summer where temperatures should vary at this time of year from 20-27°C in Buenos Aires, 10-12°C in Tierra Del Fuego and 30°C in Brazil. We can expect good weather, mostly warm and sunny, but dramatic changes in Patagonia should not be a surprise. Come prepared for everything from strong winds and rain to hot sunny days!
