INTRODUCTION
Join us for a weekend in the peace and tranquillity of the Western Lake District. Our base will be the Pennington Hotel, originally a 16th Century coaching inn and now a charming three star hotel in the centre of the old Roman port of Ravenglass. There is a lot to see and enjoy in this quiet part of the Lake District, and we have put together a programme that includes a combination of scenic walking and visits to fascinating attractions.
The Pennington Hotel is owned and operated by the Pennington family, who also own and reside in Muncaster Castle. After lying abandoned for some years, it has been lovingly refurbished and is now a charming boutique hotel in the centre of the quaint main street, with some rooms overlooking the Ravenglass estuary. The Hotel prides itself on combining contemporary design and traditional values in a historic setting, just a stone's throw from the sea and Muncaster Castle. We can be sure of a warm West Cumbrian welcome.

A special feature of the weekend will be the "country house party atmosphere" in a hotel which is passionate about food, with an emphasis on high quality local produce. In season, many of the vegetables, fruits and herbs are hand-picked from Muncaster Castle's historic Kitchen Gardens.
The weekend will be hosted by Chris Tomlinson and David Fairs of Langdale Walking & Adventure Holidays and also provides an ideal opportunity for a reunion with friends you have met on previous holidays in different parts of the world. With luck, there will also be the opportunity to meet new friends too.
The weekend includes two nights accommodation, (Friday and Saturday), excellent guided walks and all meals, culminating with Sunday lunch in the private dining room of Muncaster Castle.
Why not stay an extra night on Sunday, to further explore this delightful part of The Lake District?
Directions to Ravenglass by car are available below, but why not try the relaxing route? Leave your car at either Lancaster or Carnforth Station and catch the Cumbria Coastal train all the way to Ravenglass. This is a lovely way to arrive, with superb views of the Kent Estuary, Morecambe Bay, the Irish Sea and the Lakeland Fells. There are also several interesting viaducts to traverse. On arrival in Ravenglass it is a short walk into the village, with the hotel in the centre on Main Street.
PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE OF DATES. We have moved this trip back a weekend. This is to accommodate a wedding at the hotel on 6 - 9 July. We wish the Bride and Groom all the very best for the future and hope they have a great day.

Saturday's walk is graded Moderate and typically will take around 5 or 6 hours. It will be from the hotel and take us deep into the Eskdale Valley, enjoying superb views (weather permitting!) and culminating with a ride back down on the Ravenglass to Eskdale Railway, or "La'al Ratty" as it is known locally.
Subject to demand, alternative walks may be arranged for those looking for a harder or a more relaxing day. A picnic lunch is provided.
The walk on Sunday is at low level and graded Easy, including time to walk around the gardens of Muncaster Castle and the World Owl Trust.
We stay at Muncaster for Sunday lunch inside the Castle itself.
The weekend will be hosted by Chris and Ian Tomlinson of Langdale Walking & Adventure Holidays, with David Fairs joining on one day. It provides an ideal opportunity for a reunion with friends you have met on previous Langdale holidays, or to meet new, like-minded friends in a beautiful and inspiring location.
Please Note
Good walking gear, waterproofs and boots are essential for the walking part of this programme. Walking poles are recommended. For reasons of safety, weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances, it may be necessary to make changes to the programme without advance notice, but this will be avoided if at all possible.

ITINERARY
|

Friday 29th June 2012 - Ravenglass
2.00pm: Arrive at your leisure. Rooms will be available from 2.00pm or arrive earlier to explore the sea shore and bridleways around the estuary of the confluence of three rivers, the Irt, the Esk and the Mite. An optional afternoon tea is available in the hotel's courtyard or, if the weather is inclement, in the Hotel's award winning Estuary Restaurant.
7.30pm: Meet in the lounge bar for a welcome reception.
8.00pm: Dinner in the Estuary Restaurant
Saturday 30th June 2012 - Muncaster Fell, Stanly Force and the La'al Ratty
8.00am: Cumbrian breakfast in the restaurant. Collect our picnic lunches prepared by the hotel.
9.00am : Meet outside the hotel for the short walk to the remains of the bath house of Ravenglass Roman fort, established in AD 130.
They are among the tallest Roman structures surviving in northern Britain; the walls stand almost 4 metres (13 feet) high. The fort at Ravenglass guarded what was a useful harbour and there is evidence that soldiers stationed here served in Hadrian's fleet.
Carrying on uphill we come to Fell Lane which gives us access up a steady climb on to Muncaster Fell for great views of the estuary behind and the Lakeland Fells in front. If the weather is good we stop for a picnic lunch on the ridge at Ross's Camp, which was built by a Victorian picnic party in 1883. We drop down off the Fell at Eskdale Green where we can, if we wish, pause for light refreshments at the King George Inn. We continue through Milkingstead Woods, beside the River Esk to Stanley Gill Waterfalls, and from there we skirt the river and cross to take a look at St Catherine's Church. There has been a place of worship on this site since a seventh century hermit sat by his well and offered holy water, prayer and healing to all who sought him out. From here our route takes us to the village of Boot, where we find England's oldest working water mill. This quirky little attraction is full of fascinating facts and gives a real glimpse of life in days gone by.
We are now just half a mile from Dalegarth, head of the Ravenglass to Eskdale Railway (or La'al Ratty as it's known locally), where we board the train for the twenty five minute ride alongside the River Mite, past Muncaster Mill and back down to Ravenglass. 5 hours walking. 758ft of ascent. Grade Moderate
7.30pm We meet in the Lounge Bar before dinner is served in the restaurant
Sunday 1th July 2012 - Muncaster Castle
After another Cumbrian breakfast we set off for the walk up to Muncaster Castle - home to the Pennington family and one of the most haunted buildings in the country. The Castle is situated in a superb position overlooking the River Esk. We can take in the centuries of history in the magnificent Castle itself and still have time to explore the extensive woodland gardens and the World Owl Centre, with more than 200 birds of prey on display, before Sunday lunch is served in the Castle's magnificent private dining room.
Afterwards, if you wish to stay for a while before departing homeward, you may enjoy watching the daily 'Meet the Birds' display, or Ruskin's "Gateway to paradise" provides you with several miles of walks to enjoy.
