Starting in Boston, we walk the Freedom Trail, lunch in the famous Quincey market, take the subway out to Cambridge for a walking tour of the town and Harvard University and visit Salem, Gloucester and Plymouth, where we experience life as a pilgrim at the living museum. From Cape Cod we sail past the Kennedy compound, take the ferry to Nantucket for a cycle ride around this wonderful island, go whale watching and travel by 4 wheel drive vehicles to view the Cape's protected sand dunes.
|
In Newport our cliff top walk will take in Breakers, the Vanderbilt family's magnificent summer home, and a real highlight will be the opportunity to take a leisurely sail around the beautiful harbour, Narragansett Bay, and the ocean waters off Castle Hill on board one of the original America's Cup Yachts. Guests are welcome to get involved with the sailing or just sit and enjoy this unique experience.
We stay in luxury 4 star hotels and eat in quaint, often quayside restaurants, including the oldest restaurant in the United States, the Union Oyster House in Boston. ITINERARY
|
Friday 12 October 2012: UK to Boston
We depart either London Heathrow or Manchester for the flight to Boston Logan Airport, where we meet our local Guide and transfer by private coach to the 4-star Onyx Hotel in downtown Boston. There's time to relax and settle in before a Welcome reception and dinner in the Hotel.
Saturday 13 October 2012: Freedom Trail, Cambridge and Harvard University
After a full breakfast in the Hotel, this morning we take a walking tour of Boston's North End and the Freedom Trail. The Freedom Trail is a 2.5 mile red-brick walking trail that leads you to 16 nationally significant historic sites, each an authentic American treasure. Preserved and dedicated by the citizens of Boston in 1958, when the wrecking ball threatened, the Freedom Trail today is a unique collection of museums, churches, meeting houses, burial grounds, parks, a ship, and historic markers that tell the story of the American Revolution and the Boston Tea Party.
En route we will enjoy lunch in the famous Quincy Market in Faneuil Hall. Quincy Market combines the glories of the past and vitality of the present, with 49 shops, 44 pushcarts and 18 full service restaurants with cuisine from all over the World. In the afternoon Group will take the "T", Boston's subway system to Cambridge and for a walking tour of Cambridge, including entrance to Harvard University, before returning to the Hotel.
Dinner this evening is at the "No Name" Restaurant
Sunday 14 October 2012: Salem, Gloucester and Rockport
Today we will visit the North of Boston. Our first stop will be at The Witch Capital of the World "Salem", including entrance to the House of the Seven Gables, the inspiration for Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel of the same name.
We then drive to Gloucester & Rockport fishing villages, famous for the "Perfect Storm", where there is good walking to be had. We will try to fit in two, but if there isn't time, group members may choose which one they would most like to do.
Dogtown Tour will visit downtown Dogtown, one of America's oldest ghost towns, as well as the Babson Word Rocks, which are boulders inscribed with inspiring words from the Great Depression. This tour is about 3 miles long, and takes approx. 2 hours. The tour will take us back in time, as we see the remains of Dogtown(a colonial village from the 1700s), boulders inscribed with inspiring words from the Great Depression and rock formations created by glaciers 10,000 years ago. Whales Jaw tour will visit the infamous rock formation, Whales Jaw. Beginning at Hospital Hill, we walk the boardwalk through Briar's Swamp, and see examples of rock formations created by glaciers 10,000 years ago. The walk is about 3 miles long, and takes approx. 2 hours. On completion of the walk we drive to the historic town of Concord, famous for the battle which marked the start of the Revolutionary War.
Dinner at The Colonial Inn.
Monday 15 October 2012: Plymouth Plantation, Hyannis and Cape Cod
After breakfast, we check out of our hotel and set off to visit the town of Plymouth, where we find the Plymouth Plantation. This working museum depicts the way of life experienced by the early settlers, and includes a working recreated Pilgrim village, where the "town's people" will interact with visitors and actually speak in the English dialect of the time. The plantation also has a recreated Indian Village, which is run by the descendants of the Cape Cod Indian population. At lunchtime we learn to eat Like a Pilgrim. We forget about forks, don giant napkins and learn the 17th-century table manners that came to Plymouth with the Pilgrims.
With appetites sated, we continue to Cape Cod for an afternoon harbour cruise of Hyannis Bay, which is the only way to see the compound of the famous Kennedy family. After the harbour cruise we return to Hyannis to check into the luxurious, ocean-fronted Chatham Bars Inn, Cape Cod, for some free time before enjoy a Lobster Bake Dinner at The Paddock Restaurant. Overnight in Cape Cod.
Tuesday 17 October 2012: Whale watching
This morning a naturalist for Hyannis Whale Watching will come to our hotel and provide us with a 1 hour presentation on the whales to be found off Cape Cod. We then transfer by coach to Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises and board our whale watching vessel for a 2-3 hour cruise. With luck the whales will come out to greet us.
In the afternoon we transfer to Provincetown to enjoy a tour via 4 wheel drive vehicles into the protected sand dunes of Cape Cod National Seashore, after which there is time to walk around and explore this eclectic town. Dinner will be in Provincetown before heading back to the Hotel.
Wednesday 18 October 2012: Newport Rhode Island
Today we check out of our hotel and depart Cape Cod for the drive to America's smallest state, Rhode Island and the delightful, seaside town of Newport. We start with a visit to The Breakers, one of several famous and sumptuous Mansions in Newport. The Breakers is the grandest of these summer "cottages" and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial pre-eminence in turn of the century America.
From here we can start the Cliff Walk, along the eastern shore of Newport. This world famous public access walk combines the natural beauty of the Newport shoreline with the architectural history of Newport's gilded age. Wildflowers, birds, geology .... all add to this delightful walk. In 1975 the walk was designated as a National Recreation Trail, the 65th in the nation and first in New England. The walk runs 3.5 miles and about two-thirds is in easy walking condition with some undulation for the remainder. What makes the Cliff Walk unique is that it is a National Recreation Trail inside a National Historic District, providing much to see and admire. Walk completed we check in to the harbourside Marriott Newport. Dinner at the Mooring Restaurant.
Dinner this evening is at the Mooring Restaurant. Overnight in Newport.
Thursday 19 October 2012: Newport and Providence
There is much to explore in the charming small town of Newport, where trams trundle through quaint, tree-lined streets and an array of interesting boats bustle about the harbour. We start out with a walking tour that takes in the harbour (home to several Americas Cup Yachts and birth place of the US Navy), St Mary's Church, which hosted the wedding of John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier and the International Tennis Centre with a strong attachment to Andy Murray, who has enjoyed great success there in the run up to the American Open Championships and Brown University (attended by Emma Watson). In the afternoon we transfer by private coach to Providence, RI for a walking tour. The compact fishing village of Provincetown (or, as it's popularly known, "P-Town") is a gorgeous place, with silvery clapboard houses and gloriously unruly gardens lining the town's tiny, winding streets. Bohemians and artists have long flocked here for the dazzling light and vast beaches. Our 2-hour walk (not including stops) begins at Kennedy Plaza in the centre of Providence, and ends on College Hill at Prospect Terrace, with a fine view of the city.
We dine at a local restaurant in Providence before returning to our Hotel in Newport.
Friday 20 October 2012: Newport
Newport, RI is considered the sailing capital of the world and was the home of the America's Cup for many years. Several of these America's Cup boats are still docked in Newport harbor and offer visitors a unique sailing opportunity. We will have exclusive use of one of these yachts for a leisurely sail, either through the Bay or offshore, dependent upon the weather conditions and what our interests are. Guests are welcome to get involved with the sailing or not! The beauty of sailing and the picturesque Bay provide a great setting to relax in the gentle waters of the harbor, Narragansett Bay, and the ocean waters off Castle Hill. We will see a tremendous variety of sailboats and motor yachts from all over the world. With such a proliferation of classic vessels in the water, sometimes it seems as if we are in a floating museum of sailing history.
Later there is the opportunity for some free time in Newport before dinner at a local restaurant.
Saturday 21 October 2012: Boston
Today we return to Boston for a leisure day before transferring to Logan Airport for the flight home, arriving back in the UK early the following day. Lunch will be at The Union Oyster House, America's Oldest Resturant, and there is time to explore Boston further or do a little souvenir shopping before our coach takes us to the Airport.
Sunday 22 October 2012: UK
We arrive back in the UK.
Please note: the walking programme is weather dependent.
If conditions are unsuitable for any of the planned walks then others will be substituted.
