INTRODUCTION
Explore New Zealand in style! This well tested and high quality walking and adventure holiday introduces you to some of the very best guided walks in New Zealand. As well as including well-known tourist destinations, one of the features of this holiday is that you are taken to unusual and delightful places well off the beaten-track, including Stewart Island.
Our route to New Zealand is via Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where we break the journey overnight both ways. From Auckland we travel overland on the North Island to Tauranga, Whakatana and Rotorua, then fly to the South Island including Nelson, Queenstown, Stewart Island and Christchurch.
|
|
Walks include rainforest, geothermal, cliff and coastal walks. Highlights of the tour include the three-day Abel Tasman Coastal Track and the three-day Hollyford Track. For added interest we have included a cruise to an off-shore active volcano, jet boat experience and a fishing trip on Steward Island.
The tour has been meticulously researched and well tested based on our experience of operating similar holidays to New Zealand over the last 12 years. Most of the walks are graded MODERATE and are well within the ability of anyone who is reasonably fit. Walks are led by experienced local guides who will unfold the history, culture and nature of their delightful country.

Hotels have been selected for their high quality and are the best available in the areas we visit. Most meals in New Zealand are included in the price with breakfast in hotels and lodges and picnic lunches for the walking programme. Some dinners are served in hotels and, in order to sample the gastronomic delights of the area, others will be taken in local restaurants.
On the Abel Tasman Guided Coastal Walk we spend a night at Torrent Bay and Meadowbank Lodges. Rooms have private facilities and are located near the water's edge. They are charming, rustic and delightful. On the Hollyford Track we spend one night at Pyke River Lodge and one night at Martins Bay Lodge. Both lodges are great places to unwind and reflect on the day's walking. They are well appointed with private toilet and shower facilities. Single accommodation is not guaranteed, but every effort will be made to provide single rooms for single clients, subject to availability.

Day 3 - Wednesday 13th January 2010 - Kuala Lumpur / In flight
Free time in Kuala Lumpur. Evening transfer to the airport for the flight to Auckland. B
Auckland - This is the main gateway city to New Zealand, with a population of over one million. Greater Auckland is also the centre of commerce and industry but within minutes of the city you can experience uncrowded beaches, rural countryside and forests. The dominating features of the Auckland cityscape are the graceful lines of the Harbour bridge, the sparkling waters of the Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf, and the brooding cone of Rangitoto Island - the last of the cities 48 volcanoes to erupt - just 600 years ago.
Day 4 - Thursday 14th January 2010 - Auckland
"Haere Mai" - Welcome to New Zealand. Meet and Greet by AOT representative (our agents in New Zealand) and transfer by private coach to the Stamford Plaza Hotel (Deluxe room). Free time in the afternoon for you to explore Auckland and its delightful harbour, just a stone's throw away.
In the evening we enjoy a welcome drinks reception in the hotel before taking the five minute's walk to Auckland's historic Ferry Building where dinner has been booked at the Harbourside Seafood Bar and Grill Restaurant. After dinner walk back to the hotel. Overnight at the Stamford Plaza Hotel.
D
Day 5 - Friday 15th January 2010 - Auckland/Tauranga/Whakatane
This morning leave Auckland by private coach with a driver/guide and travel south over the Bombay Hills. We travel across the Hauraki Plains to Paeroa then through the picturesque Karangahake Gorge to Waihi on the Pacific Coast. From Waihi continue to Katitaki, a town famous for the many colourful murals painted on the shops and offices of the main street, then follow the inner harbour to Tauranga.
Tauranga - Located 206km southeast of Auckland and 86km northeast of Rotorua, the region boasts a population of approximately 105,000 people. Tauranga receives between 2200 - 2400 hours of sunshine per year making it the second sunniest place in New Zealand. Average temperatures range from 24°C in summer to 14.5°C in winter. Nearby Mount Maunganui has a beautiful ocean beach, popular with surfers, sunbathers and swimmers. Central to an area rich in forestry, agriculture and horticulture, the Port of Tauranga is New Zealand's leading port, exporting timber, paper, fruit and dairy products.
Optional lunch in Tauranga, followed by our first hike of the holiday to Mount Maunganui (also known as Mauao - meaning 'caught by the light' in Maori mythology), located across the Harbour from Tauranga, it stands at 232m high and offers breath-taking views of the beaches, the city, the nearby islands and the Kaimai Ranges. The Mount has a special significance to the local tribe as it was used as a pa (fort). Grade Easy. 4 hours.
Depart from Tauranga and travel to Te Puke, a town that has turned its kiwifruit industry into visitor entertainment. We drive eastward and the journey offers fabulous views of the surf coast for most of the way. From Matata we follow the scenic coastal route via Thornton and Paroa to Whakatane. Dinner at the Wharf Shed. Overnight White Island Rendezous. BD
Whakatane - One of the sunniest towns in New Zealand. Just offshore is White Island, a spectacular active volcano that we visit by launch on either Saturday or Sunday. Other Whakatane attractions include the museum, an observatory and Maori historical sites. Nearby is beautiful pohutakwa fringed Ohope beach. At the western end is a walking track that gives a magnificent panorama of the coastline and leads down to picturesque Otarawairere Bay.
Day 6 - Saturday 16th January 2010 - Whakatane - White Island cruise and guided walk
Our tour departs from the Whakatane Wharf where we embark on PeeJay, a luxury launch built for the tours to Whakaari (White) Island. White Island Tours with 'PeeJay' give an in-depth guided tour of one of the world's most interesting volcanoes and the island's history. The trip out to the island takes approximately 80 minutes, depending on conditions, so there is plenty of time to take in the scenery and marine life and enjoy the commentary.
On the way the crew issue everyone with safety gear (hard hat and mask). On arrival at White Island, PeeJay is anchored and we are ferried over to the island via inflatable boat to the jetty. There is a short ladder to climb, a steel planking system to cross, and some boulders to negotiate before reaching the shore and then it is time to start the exploration of New Zealand's only live marine volcano. Trained guides lead us through the remains of the old sulphur mining factory with a close view of the bright yellow sulphur crystals. Venture right up to the main crater's edge to witness the hissing, roaring, eerie steam rising from the crater lake.
Look out for dolphins on the cruise back. Walk Grade EASY 4 hours.
*Alternative guided walk from Whakatane to Ohope. (As the visit to White Island is weather dependent, a guided walk to Ohope has been planned as an alternative to White Island.) Expect to see superb Pacific Coast, rural views and one of the country's largest pohutakawa forests on this cliff and beach guided walk. Around the half way mark we stop for an optional swim with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, Whakaari Island (White Island) and the marine volcano. Walk Grade EASY apart from some steep ascent/descent at the beginning and end. Walking time about 4 hours. Distance 7km. Optional lunch at Café Surfside at Ohope. Return to Whakatane by taxi.
Dinner at the Wharf Shed. Overnight White Island Rendezous. BLD
Day 7 - Sunday 17th January 2010 - Rotorua
If we managed to get to White Island yesterday, the coastal walk from Whakatane to Ohope will take place this morning. We check out and depart after breakfast. On completion of the walk our coach will collect us from Ohope and travel west over the Rangitaiki River to Te Teko then alongside beautiful lakes Rotoma and Rotoiti to Rotorua. Free time on arrival.
Late afternoon visit for a guided walk to Te Puia (Whakarewarewa) that houses the Maori Arts & Craft Institute. Prepare to be amazed by the beauty and uniqueness of this thermal reserve with silica terraces, bubbling mud pools, the famous Pohutu Geyser and more than 500 springs, which vary from cold to violently boiling.
After the walk, enjoy a "Mai Ora" Maori Hangi dinner and concert. Be enchanted, delighted and entertained by a variety of traditional Maori performances. Experience the Haka (war dance) and the twirling of poi stick games and listen to action songs that tell stories of old. Another highlight of the evening is the Hangi dinner cooked in the traditional earth oven. As the evening ends you have gained a true insight into the world of the Maori as it was and as it is today.
Overnight Novotel Lakeside Hotel. BD
Rotorua - Once known as the "Sulphur City", it has the most energetic thermal activity in the country with boiling mud pools, gurgling hot springs and gushing geysers. All around the city, steam drifts up from behind the bushes, out of road drains and around rocks. Rotorua also has the largest Maori population and some of the best trout fishing in the world.
Day 8 - Monday 18th January 2010 - Rotorua - Tarawara Waterfalls Hike
Unexpected sights and magnificent scenery await those who venture on this full day guided trip, including a lake cruise and waterfall walk. On the scenic lake cruise take in the stunning panoramas of Lake and Mount Tarawera and enjoy the informative commentary about the 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption and the area's volcanic past. The walk follows the path of an ancient lava flow through a rainforest rich with ferns, lichens and mosses in sight of the crystal clear Tarawera River. See the surging river unexpectedly disappearing into subterranean chambers then finally blasting out of a sheer cliff face 30m high creating the spectacular Tarawera Falls.
The return journey to Rotorua is via some of the region's most scenic lakes and a walk in a magnificent rainforest completes this fascinating day of beauty and tranquillity.
Dinner in local restaurant. Overnight Novotel Lakeside Hotel. BLD
Day 9 - Tuesday 19th January 2010 - Rotorua - Wellington - Nelson
Fly Rotorua to Nelson via Wellington. Dinner in the hotel. Overnight Monaco Hotel and Resort (Deluxe room). www.monacoresort.co.nz BD
Nelson is a favourite vacation destination for many New Zealanders with the highest sunshine rate in the country. It has its own golden beach at Tahunanui. Kahurangi, Nelson Lakes and Abel Tasman National Park are all within easy reach. Nelson is noted for its arts, music and crafts and there are plenty of outlets for browsing or buying around town.
Day 10 - Wednesday 20th January 2010 - Abel Tasman Guided Coastal Walk
We are picked up at 7.30am and driven to the entrance of the National Park at Marahau. Our walk starts along the gentlest grade on the track and we rediscover the pristine bays and headlands named by French explorer, Du'mont Durville in 1827. Stop for lunch at one of the bays then walk to Torrent Bay Lodge on the beachfront where we enjoy afternoon tea and home made scones. Walk Grade Easy. 5 hours. Overnight Torrent Bay Lodge. BLD

At midday, we either stop at Bark Bay for lunch, or continue on to Onetahuti, taking time out to relax, explore, swim or sunbathe on the golden sands. Setting off from Awaroa we walk along the beach and cross the Awaroa Estuary. Walk through the northern forests of the Park with magnificent specimens of Nikau Palm and Rata. Arrive at Totaranui (great place for a swim on a beautiful beach) then join our comfortable launch to cruise the coastline we have just walked. Hot drinks, covered or open decks and bathroom facilities are available on board. Overnight Monaco Hotel. Dinner in the hotel. BLD
Day 13 - Saturday 23rd January 2010 - Nelson - Queenstown
Transfer to Nelson airport, depart Nelson on Air New Zealand flight to Christchurch. Depart Christchurch on Air New Zealand flight to Queenstown. Arrive and transfer to the hotel. Dinner in the hotel. Overnight The Heritage Hotel. BD
Queenstown - Right on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown is nestled in what is surely one of the most scenic spots in the world. There are over a 100 attractions on offer from bungy jumping to art trails, and many of these activities are perfectly well-suited to anyone of all ages. The Hollyford 3 day Wilderness Journey is an all inclusive spectacular walk from the mountains to the sea suitable for a wide range of fitness levels. Unlike any other walk, the scenery is geologically spectacular and ever changing - snow capped mountains, glaciers, rainforests, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, reefs, sand dunes and surf. The experiences are diverse and include - hiking, wildlife interaction, historical tales, jet boating and a magnificent scenic flight to Milford Sound.
Depart Queenstown at approximately 07:00 and travel alongside beautiful Lake Wakatipu and on to Te Anau. After a brief stop, to collect those departing from Te Anau, we continue our journey travelling through the majestic Eglington Valley to the start of the Track in the Hollyford Valley visiting Gunn's Camp museum on the way. We re-trace the footsteps of early explorers along the Hollyford River to Pyke River Lodge. As the track undulates through native beech forest and alongside tumbling waterfalls we enjoy interesting historical tales and interpretation of the forest and bird life. Arrive at Pyke River Lodge and relax for the evening over a glass of wine and reflect on the amazing sights and senses of our first day in the Hollyford Valley. After dinner you can visit the nearby glow-worm colony. Walking Distance: approx. 17km. BLD
Day 15 - Monday 25th January 2010 - Hollyford Wilderness Track
Begin the day with a short walk to Lake Alabaster to learn about the history and geology of the area in the midst of stunning surroundings. Pack whatever you need for two nights on Stewart Island and leave the remainder of your luggage at Invercargill Airport in safe keeping.
Stewart Island - This is New Zealand's third largest island and in the Maori language is known as Rakiura, which translates as 'the land of the glowing skies'. This name probably refers to the aurora australis, an atmospheric phenomenon which is often seen in the southern sky. Most of the island is a National Park with 28km of road and only one settlement of any size - Halfmoon Bay. Offshore is the predator-free bird sanctuary, Ulva Island. Stewart Island has the highest number of bird species in New Zealand. The approximate population of the island is only 420. Visit the island's Rakiura Museum and the local stores offering paua pearls (abalone) that have been grown on the island. Optional lunch in Oban.

Day 19 - Friday 29th January 2010 - Stewart Island
Morning nature walk and cruise to Ulva Island. Located in Waka o te Wera (Paterson Inlet), with 11km of coastline, Ulva Island is a scenic gem of unsurpassed beauty. Optional lunch in Oban.
Plant Life - Under the luxuriant green mantle of podocarp forest the walk is rich with mosses, ferns, liverworts, filmy ferns and native orchids. The ancient rimu tree (dacrydium cupressinum) is seen at all stages of growth: seedlings, saplings, young juveniles, to the majestic giants that tower to the forest roof. Totara, kamahi (weinmannia racemosa), southern rata (metrosideros umbellata) and miro (prumnopitys ferruginea) abound among the uncurling fern fronds that carpet the forest floor.
Wildlife - Ulva Island is a sanctuary to threatened wildlife. In 2000, 30 saddleback (tieke) & 16 Stewart Island Robins (toutouwai) were released. Listen for the songs of bellbird and tui, their bursts of melody interspersed with raucous call of the kaka and the chattering native parakeet kakariki.
Afternoon - Fishing trip and cruise to Paterson Inlet. We will be fishing for the local delicacy, Blue Cod and tonight we get together for a home cooked fish barbeque. Overnight Bay Motel. BD
Day 20 - Saturday 30th January 2010 - Christchurch
Fly from Stewart Island to Invercargill and then on to Christchurch. Transfer by private coach to the hotel. Optional walk to the Botanical Gardens and to explore this beautiful city.
Christchurch - a serenely beautiful garden city often described as the most English of New Zealand's cities. Over a third of its central area is devoted to beautiful parks and gardens. The serpentine Avon River, fringed by weeping willows and tall English trees, flows quietly through the city. Walking around is easy as the city is quite compact, or you can just catch a tram. The city has a lively arts and cultural scene, with several theatres, frequent concerts and musical festivals, and probably the greatest concentration of arts and craft talent in the country. Christchurch also has excellent shopping, numerous restaurants, cafes and wine bars. Dinner at the hotel - The Heritage Hotel. BD
