INTRODUCTION
This is a return visit to the delightful Burleigh Court Hotel in Minchinhampton for a weekend of fine dining and excellent guided walks to explore some of the best villages and footpaths in the Cotswolds.

Our guides live locally and will be able to explain the geography and history of the area in which they live as we enjoy our walks. The 2½ day programme of guided walks through picture-postcard villages and unspoilt countryside has been designed to be non-strenuous and relaxing, and should be well within the capability of anyone who is reasonably fit.

Meals include full English breakfast with evening dinner parties in their fine restaurant, which enjoys an excellent reputation in the neighbourhood. The hotel is a family-owned and operated, and graded AA 3-star. It is Johansen recommended, Ashely Courtney recommended and is featured in the Good Hotel Guide and the Good Garden Guide.

HOW TO GET THERE
Leave the M5 at junction 13, taking the A419 through Stroud, heading east towards Cirencester. About 2½ miles after Stroud, take a right turn which is signposted Burleigh and Minchinhampton. This right turn leads you up the side of a hill, and after a further 500 yards there is a sharp left turn, signposted Burleigh Court (easy to miss!!). Take the next left turn and the hotel is on the right after 300 yards.

Please meet in the lounge at 3.30pm for our introductory walk: Leaving the hotel, we walk up to the National Trust common near Minchinhampton with lovely views along the way, then proceed through the unspoilt Cotswold village of Box and across the fields to the ancient market town of Minchinhampton, with an optional stop for afternoon tea. We return across the common to the hotel. Distance 2½ miles. Grade Easy.

7.30pm - meet in the hotel lounge for a welcome reception, followed at 8.00pm by a dinner party in the hotel restaurant.  D

Day 2 - Saturday 23rd October 2010 - Toadsmoor and Bussage
bussage woodland After a full English breakfast in the hotel restaurant, the walk starts from the hotel and descends into the Golden Valley where it follows the canal then climbs out of the valley, and reaches more open countryside with views over the valley and back to the hotel. The route then descends into the quiet wooded Toadsmoor valley, which is only really accessible on foot. The route continues up the valley near its bottom before returning on a track high above. It then goes into the village of Bussage and through some woods before descending again to the bottom of the Golden Valley, and returns to the hotel via the canal towpath and climbs back up the lanes. Allowing for stops, the walk should take 5-6 hours. Distance approx. 8 miles. Grade Moderate.

7.30pm - meet in the hotel lounge prior to a dinner party in the hotel restaurant at 8.00pm.  BLD

Day 3 - Sunday 24th October 2010 - Haresfield Beacon and Standish Woods
cotswolds sunrise Full English breakfast in the hotel, followed this morning by a slightly later departure for our guided walk. Cars will be needed to get to the start point.

This walk is a figure of eight, with two loops of approx. 4 miles each (the first one slightly shorter). It starts from a National Trust car park just north of Stroud, about 6 miles by car from the hotel. The first loop takes us first to the viewpoint of Haresfield Beacon and then follows the Cotswold Way to the Cromwell Stone, which commemorates the siege of Gloucester in 1643 and from where we get good views over the city. The route then descends on tracks through woods and farmland before a steep climb through woods takes us back up to the higher ground. We then return to the car park over relatively level farmland for a picnic lunch stop.

The second, slightly longer loop takes us to another viewpoint with its excellent topograph before descending the Cotswold escarpment above the old Standish Hospital. The route rises again through the edge of Standish Wood via another good viewpoint to the village of Randwick. After passing through the village, the route climbs again through Ruscombe and Standish Woods to return to the car park. For anyone preferring a shorter afternoon, there is a shorter route which bypasses Randwick by following a track through Standish Wood and then a lane to rejoin the main route at the top of Ruscombe Wood, saving about three quarters of a mile.

The first loop is about 3.8 miles, the second 4.5 miles (or 3.8 miles if the shorter loop is followed). Grade Moderate. Distance approx. 8 miles.

This evening we meet in the hotel restaurant at 8.00pm for dinner.  BLD
